WOW! Thank you Fantastic Fives at Iqra School for sharing your pre-reading inquiry learning. It looks like you have done some thorough investigation already. I love all your wonderings about what is on the cover.
Kia ora, My name is Oliver from Tamatea intermediate (Rongokako, Mrs. Howard's class). I like how you didn't just research one subject, but three. For me the most interesting topic you researched was the last one about Pauline Smith, as I didn't research much about the author. So I was surprised when you said that she was educated in 7 different primary schools. You also said that she was born in 1963 so she was living during the dawn raids, so do you think she was also a target of the dawn raids?
I love the thought that the images in the corners are things that symbolises the main characters goals! I never thought of a possibility like that! Seth-SpxTui.
Kia ora, my name is Salin from SPXTui I like the way you made colourful drawings like the eyes and the thinking drawings, I also like your thinking and wonderings about the picture or cover.
Kia ora, I am Catherine from St. Pius X school Hamilton. I agree with your thinking, and ideas. My favourite one is "She want's to stop racism." Nice thinking, that might be what the photo is about.
Hello! Its Marley from SPX Tūī I didn't know that the Polynesian Panthers were fighting against racism and inequality. Thanks for sharing this information

Kia Ora fantastic five, It Jai S from Tamatea intermediate school, I am in Rongokako Mrs Howard's class. I really like it how you have done research on multiple different subjects, I find that it makes your work more at attractive having multiple different subjects to read. I also like it how you have your own wonderings about the front cover. Why did you choose to research on multiple different subjects.
Our pre reading activity involved reading different newspaper headlines and writing down our thoughts and wonderings about it. May be some of our thoughts and wonderings change after we read the book and know more about it. We are also going to be fact checking for what we have written.
Here are some statements from Rongokako students about their thoughts on the front cover; "I like the contrast between the colours on the book, and I like the references throughout the cover towards the story inside the book. I wonder why in the thought bubbles there are some uncommon items and I wonder how they will be used/referred to in the text." - Matthew "I think the milk signifies their job because there weren't many jobs for foreigners at that time and the job of delivering the milk bottles is low paying. I wonder if the story will be told from multiple perspectives or just from Sophia's point of view. I also wonder if it will talk about their struggles and other peoples struggles from that time." - Oliver "The colour that the title is written in reminds me of the color of dawn. I wonder why there are three Polynesian panthers at different points of the covers; I think this because they could appear in the story quite frequently. The texture of ...
