Civil Rights and how it relates to the Maori Land March

Assalamu alaikum (a greeting in Arabic which means peace be upon you) and Kia ora.

I am Noor from Iqra School. My friend Faruq and I have been inquiring about civil rights and what it has to do with the Maori Land March (hikoi). I hope you enjoy and understand although it is very brief. Also give us your thoughts in the comments.

 Civil Rights

What are civil rights?

Civil rights are a class of rights that gives equal treatment to all citizens irrespective of their race, religion, birth, caste.

When a group’s or an individual’s civil rights are challenged it leads to civil rights movements.

What are the big things that had something to do with civil rights?

There are many different events that took place around the world that initiated social change and civil right movements, such as:

1955: Montgomery Bus Boycott

1961:Albany movement

1965: Bloody sunday

1975: Maori Land March (NZ)

These are only a few examples of civil right movements. There are many others around the world.

Does the Maori movement of stolen land have to do with civil rights?

It is a civil rights movement because the Maori people have the right to own their land and speak up for themselves and their properties. So they started hikoi.

What happened to the Maori that made them stand up for what they believed was right?

The Europeans colonised the Maori people and declared the Maori land their own. Obviously the Maori people adore and respect their holy land, so they obviously stood in the Europeans way of getting what they wanted, sadly for the Maori people many of their soldiers died fighting for what they believed.
