Analysing Front Cover - Rongokako Mrs's Howards Class
Here are some statements from Rongokako students about their thoughts on the front cover;
"I like the contrast between the colours on the book, and I like the references throughout the cover towards the story inside the book. I wonder why in the thought bubbles there are some uncommon items and I wonder how they will be used/referred to in the text." - Matthew
"I think the milk signifies their job because there weren't many jobs for foreigners at that time and the job of delivering the milk bottles is low paying. I wonder if the story will be told from multiple perspectives or just from Sophia's point of view. I also wonder if it will talk about their struggles and other peoples struggles from that time." - Oliver
"The colour that the title is written in reminds me of the color of dawn. I wonder why there are three Polynesian panthers at different points of the covers; I think this because they could appear in the story quite frequently. The texture of the cover looks like it was painted over cardboard because the paint is chipping and there seems to be lines in the paint. I also think this because the family could be members of the Polynesian Panthers and they used cardboard signs." - Kurt
"I noticed that the colours are very vibrant and the artist that designed the cover purposely choose these colors to make Sophia stand out on the cover. I wonder why the artist that made the cover choose to draw her in that style." - Amira
"I think the story could be about protestors because of the Polynesian Panthers and the megaphone symbols." - Zane
"I think the turquoise pattern around Sofia represents island art and has some connection to possible tattoos that the Panthers have. The formation that has been used in this artwork shows flowing images that connect and meet each other which could indicate the close ties of a big family (possibly 18 members)".
I think that the family member might become involved in the Polynesian Panthers and that Sofia will help other members of her community when they need it. I am wondering how the Dawn Raids affect Sofia's family? What are you wondering and why? - Jai
Kia Ora Matthew,
ReplyDeleteIt's Jai S here from Tamatea intermediate. I like your analysation I think the 'uncommon items' might be different layers in her life example the milk bottles might be what she has to do each day and then you move onto the next layer about protesting and getting raided. What are your thoughts on the 'uncommon items'.
Kia ora Zane, my name is Kurt from Tamatea Intermediate
ReplyDeleteI concur with you. If you look throughout the whole cover, you can see 3 Polynesian Panthers. I also think that this signifies that the Polynesian Panthers will appear in the story quite frequently since there is one at the front, at the spine of the book, and at the back on top of the barcode. Do you think so too?
Kia ora Kurt, my name is Zane and I go to Tamatea Intermediate. I did not notice the 2 other Polynesian Panthers! I do think that they will appear a lot in the story.
DeleteKia ora, I am Nukutai I go to Tamatea intermediate.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jai, I think one of Sofia's family members are going to get involved in the Polynesian Panthers and Sofia is going to be against it. I am wondering if New Zealand citizens took this problem the right way because the reason why Tonga and Samoa came to New Zealand is because New Zealand needed worker.
Hello Kurt,
ReplyDeleteI found your analysis interesting. I also made the connection between the chipping paint and the cardboard/wooden texture to the signs that protests usually hold up. I think that the polynesian panther symbols are in different places around the cover because that is there logo. Is there anything you are wondering about the cover?
-Daniel
Hey Kurt,
ReplyDeleteI'm Matthew from Tamatea Intermediate and I agree with everything you have said. I especially like what you said about the texture of the book. I think you have thought it
out thoroughly and I like your reasoning. I also like your reasoning on why you think there are three different panthers, I like the depth that you went into and I can tell you have reasoned through your thinking. What do you think the different colours symbolize? Why do you think this?
Hello! I'm Amira, I go to Tamatea intermediate.
ReplyDeleteI love everyone's ideas and thoughts!
Though I personally connect with Kurt's idea about the chipping paint and cardboard/wooden texture that the signs have. I also did not notice the other 2 panthers! You have a very good eye.
Kia Ora Oliver,
ReplyDeleteI'm Valerie and I also think that the milk bottles signify their job too because since the story is based in the 1970s. Maybe that was Sophia's part time job and that she was saving the money she earned to buy her Groovy Go-Go Boots.
I wonder if the story will go from multiple perspectives too. It would be cool to see what all the characters think and feel.
Hi Valerie
DeleteI'm Mollie. I totally agree with you about the milk bottles , and justifing your answer I think you explaned it really well. I also like your wondering about if the milk bottles in Sofias job , Do you thonk she will get her Grovy Go - Go boots
Kia ora Oliver,
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Josh and I go to Tamatea Intermediate,
I agree with your analysing of how the milk bottles on the front cover signified their jobs and how people struggled to get money when doing milk runs was a low paying job. I also think that maybe throughout the book she did milk runs to try and get the Groovy Go-Go boots.
Hi everyone, Talofa and Kia ora,
ReplyDeleteWow! You have done such a super analysis of the cover. I am looking forward to what you discover, confirm or question as you read Dawn Raid. Tino pai everyone.
Cheers
Pauline
Kia ora Pauline My name is Nukutai,
DeleteI think I am speaking on behalf of everyone when I am say I was exited when I heard that you commented on our post. Unfortunately most of our class has gone on a skiing trip today but when they come back I think they would be very exited and they would want to reply to you as soon as possible. We are super excited to start reading the text that you wrote and have enjoyed learning more about the Dawn Raids and are beginning to ask questions about the reasons behind them. We watched a part of Jacinda's speech and think that it was good that she has apologised for the wrongs that were done.
We cannot wait to find out how all of the the images on the front of the book connect and look forward to following all of the wonderings that we have throughout the readaloud process. When you wrote this book did it bring back memories and were they good or bad? We have been able to relate to you going to Maccas and are also wondering how people connected back in the 1970's.
